Whitehouse Farmhouse - Shop Lane
Whitehouse Farm was built on the east side of Hethersett in the late seventeenth century and is now occupied as two dwellings. Older villagers remember it as Old Maids' Farm. It was brick built in Flemish bond and almost certainly thatched. Now the old bricks are colourwashed and the roof is pantiled.
Viewed from the front by the road, the building presents a unified facade although the right section has been partly encased in modern bricks and is of no special interest. The dwelling to the left, two storeys and attic, has a platband, central door and a casement opening under a segmental arch. Other casements are more recent. The gable stands high with plinth, platband, eaves band and tall parapets. At the rear the platband is repeated and a one storey with attic wing comes forward from the right which is completed by a gable and parapet. Various changes in window openings are visible.
A central cross passage leads through an internal door frame which is decorated with small chamfered stops. Similar chamfers are present on ceiling joists. Massive first floor tie beams span the building on the first floor.
A well with a pump is sunk near the rear door.
